A CBCP executive applauds the government for repatriating over 800,000 OFWs.

A representative of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines-Episcopal Commission on Migrants and Itinerants (CBCP-ECMI) thanked the government for its efforts to repatriate overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) afflicted by the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) epidemic.

Bishop Ruperto Santos, the vice-chairperson of the CBCP-ECMI, said on Friday that he praises the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) for continuing to send back Filipino employees, with a total of 809,374 as of November 28.

“Jobs in foreign lands are dubious with continual Covid-19. DOLE’s responsible and supportive repatriation efforts for our displaced OFWs are greatly appreciated. TUPAD (Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers) is a huge benefit and financial assistance to them,” Santos said in an interview with church-run radio station Radio Veritas.

TUPAD is a DOLE flagship program that provides vulnerable workers with transitional emergency employment under Department Order No. 173-17.

The Balanga prelate also advised people to keep praying and trusting God to bring the global pandemic to an end.

“Covid-19 has had an impact on everyone. There are no exceptions. We are in pain. The economy is in bad shape. We are weighed down. Right now, everyone is quite concerned about Omicron (variant). “However, let us trust God and turn to Him even more so that it can be contained and vaccines can be used more successfully to combat it,” he stated.

Santos further stated that the Diocese of Balanga continues to provide scholarships at religious schools to children of OFWs, particularly those who have lost their jobs.

“The Church’s care and assistance to our OFWs is to provide scholarship grants to the sons and daughters of our OFWs in their parochial schools.” This is what the Diocese of Balanga is doing,” he explained.

“Our Stella Maris-Philippines provides monetary support, counseling, and livelihood programs to our seafarers,” he continued.

In May 2020, the government began repatriating affected OFWs.
