Palace is ecstatic about PH’s rise to 57th place in the Covid recovery index.

The Philippines has jumped from 103rd to 57th place in the Nikkei Covid-19 Recovery Index, which measures infection, control, immunization, and mobility.

Acting Presidential Spokesperson Karlo Nograles praised the outcome, noting that the country is now ranked 46 places higher than it was in October when it was ranked 103rd out of 120 countries.

“As we previously indicated, rankings like this should take into account the Covid-19 context for each country.” “Our 121st September and 103rd October rankings were completed during a rise in cases caused by the Delta variant in the Philippines,” Nograles said in a Palace press briefing.

He went on to say, “This new Nikkei Covid-19 Recovery Index is a clear indicator that we have successfully contained the highly-transmissible Delta variety.”

Nograles, who is also the Cabinet Secretary, reiterated the Palace’s plea for people to be attentive, especially during the holiday season, by wearing face masks, cleaning their hands, keeping a safe distance, and getting vaccinated against Covid-19.

“We can see the light at the end of the tunnel,” he remarked, “but the only way we can reach to the finish is if we continue to carefully watch our steps.”

When asked if the country may be downgraded to the lowest Alert Level 1 despite the imminent Omicron variant of Covid-19, Nograles stated the government’s Covid-19 task team is still evaluating World Health Organization results (WHO).

“Well, we’re keeping a close eye on Omicron, and inaabangan din po namin kung ano iyong magiging final conclusions mula sa WHO, as well as mula sa ating mga health specialists worldwideโ€ฆ

If [Omicron] is more deadly, more severe, and more transmissible. We’re waiting for definitive findings from the WHO and our worldwide health experts to see if the new variety is more lethal, severe, and transmissible. “We’re also completing the Alert Level 1 specifications,” he added.

The Inter-Agency Task Force for Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID), according to Nograles, will meet on Thursday to examine possible adjustments to the country’s warning levels.

“We will address that in the IATF this coming Thursday kasi (since) the IATF is inter-agency, we need to get feedback from different Cabinet members as well as other government agencies and ministries before we can come up with a consensus decision,” he added.

Due to the appearance of the new Omicron variety, Metro Manila and most portions of the country are currently under Alert Level 2 until December 15.

On Monday, the country reported 543 new Covid-19 cases, the eighth consecutive day with fewer than 700 new cases.

Overcoming Hunger

Meanwhile, Nograles praised the Philippines’ improved score of 16.8 on the 2021 Global Hunger Index, compared to 25.0 in 2000, 20.4 in 2006, and 20.5 in 2012.

Undernourishment, child wasting, child stunting, and child mortality are the four indicators used in the Global Hunger Index.

According to Nograles, the Philippines is now ranked eighth among the 21 economies in South Asia, East Asia, and Southeast Asia, citing the research.

He claims that laws such as Republic Act 11037, or the Masustansyang Pagkain para sa Batang Pilipino Act, which establishes a national feeding program for malnourished children, and Republic Act 11148, or the Kalusugan at Nutrisyon ng Mag-Nanay Act, which establishes a proper maternal and child health care program to prevent stunted growth in children, have helped to address the Global Hunger Index’s areas of concern

Nograles added that the Palace is encouraged by the results of the Social Weather Station’s (SWS) third-quarter 2021 survey, which show a decrease in the number of Filipino families experiencing involuntary hunger, from 30.7 percent in September 2020 to 10% in September 2021, a decrease of 20.7 percent from the same period last year.

“These are also the lowest figures recorded during the pandemic.” “This is a clear indicator that the plans we have in place and the initiatives your administration is undertaking are succeeding,” he said.

In the midst of the current health crisis, the Duterte administration is juggling the management of Covid-19 with the safe reopening of the economy.

To ensure population protection, the government wants to vaccinate at least 54 million Filipinos by the end of this year.
