PRRD welcomes Biden invites to participate in virtual Summit for Democracy

President Rodrigo Duterte has accepted US President Joseph “Joe” Biden Jr.’s offer to attend the Summit for Democracy via videoconference on December 9 and 10.

“Biden asked Heads of State and Government, other government officials, and voices from the private and non-profit sectors to join the US in taking action to strengthen democracy,” the White House said in a statement.

In his invitation letter to Duterte, Biden stated the US will β€œhost the Summit for Democracy with humility and in the spirit of mutual learning.”

Biden said collectively, β€œwe will embark on the work necessary to construct a bright and peaceful future predicated on respect for the rights and aspirations of all people.”

β€œWe recognize and appreciate your participation in fighting to develop democratic and human rights-respecting societies that allow all citizens to prosper. In a moment of significant difficulty and enormous opportunity, it is more crucial than ever for democracies to prove that we can provide for the demands of our people,” he said in his invitation.

Biden said he also looks forward to hosting Duterte and hearing his ideas on β€œhow we can build a more democratic, equitable, inclusive and sustainable world.”

Duterte equally welcomed the opportunity to discuss the Philippine democratic experience and dedication to democratic values and nation-building at the Summit for Democracy.

The Summit for Democracy will focus on challenges and possibilities facing democracies and will give a venue for leaders to announce both individual and collective commitments, reforms, and efforts to safeguard democracy and human rights at home and abroad, according to its website.

In advance of the first summit, the US is consulting with experts from the government, multilateral organizations, philanthropies, civil society, and the private sector to solicit bold, actionable ideas on three key themes: countering authoritarianism, addressing and combating corruption, and promoting respect for human rights.

It stated that “leaders would be encouraged to declare specific steps and commitments to substantive internal changes and international efforts that achieve the Summit’s goals.”

“These pledges will include internal and international actions to resist authoritarianism, eliminate corruption, and promote human rights,” it continued.

In October, Duterte stated he wanted to visit the US to personally thank their government for the donation of vaccines against Covid-19.

To date, the United States has contributed around PHP1.9 billion (USD39 million) to the Philippines’ Covid-19 response.
