Vehicle speeds on the Edsa are increasing as a result of a new reduction scheme.

Since the implementation of the new limited Unified Vehicular Volume Reduction Program, the average speed of motor vehicles traveling the Epifanio Delos Santos Avenue (Edsa) has increased (UVVRP).

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chair, Benhur Abalos Jr., revealed during President Rodrigo Duterte’s Talk to the People on Tuesday that from December 1 to 3, an 89 percent increase in average vehicle speed was recorded from Timog Avenue to Quezon Avenue on Edsa.

“In several designated important sections along the Edsa, travel speed has indeed improved. For example, from C. Jose (in Pasay) to Ortigas Avenue, which was once a crowded area during peak hours, it has now become a traffic-manageable area. “The same is true in Katipunan (Quezon City Avenue) to Biglang-Awa (Caloocan Street),” Abalos remarked.

According to him, the current UVVRP, also known as number coding, is limited during peak hours β€” 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. β€” because traffic slowing was largely observed on the northbound side of Edsa, while southbound averages 11 km/h.

Public transit, according to Abalos, is also at 70 percent of its full capacity.

He pointed out that the number of vehicles passing through Edsa on a single day has increased to 401,000, up from 405,000 when the Covid-19 pandemic was announced in 2020.

During the commencement of the health crisis in March of last year, the coding scheme was lifted since public transit was either suspended or curtailed as part of health and safety protocols.

Motor vehicles with license plates ending in 1 and 2 are prohibited from driving on Metro Manila roads during peak hours on Mondays, 3 and 4 on Tuesdays, 5 and 6 on Wednesdays, 7 and 8 on Thursdays, and 9 and 0 on Fridays, according to the UVVRP.
