The global average for PH case fatality is less than 2%.

The Department of Health (DOH) on Wednesday said the country’s case fatality rate (CFR) as of Dec. 7 is now at 1.61 percent and is below the global average of 2.0 percent.

This Philippine CFR was substantially lower than the 9 percent CFR stated in the Nikkei Covid-19 Recovery Index press release.

The DOH noted that Covid-19 cases and deaths peaked in September 2021, both have continually dropped later, along with the monthly case fatality rates. In October 2021, there were 4,348 deaths and a CFR of 1.84 percent whereas in November, the death toll was 838 and the CFR was 1.81 percent.

The DOH further indicated that the Philippine CFR used in the Nikkei Covid-19 Recovery Index was the rolling-average CFR in Our World in Data (OWID) (OWID). The 9 percent CFR calculated by the OWID was based on the number of reported deaths per day from Nov. 18 to 27. However, of the 2,096 deaths documented for that period, just 16 percent happened in November, whereas 80 percent occurred between August to October.

It indicated the increased reported deaths in this latter part of November 2021 was due to delayed encoding, validation, and reporting of death information to COVIDKaya.

“The Covid-19 deaths have to be validated by local Epidemiology and Surveillance Units on the ground. We are aware of the delays in the encoding of death information to COVIDKaya consequently we are addressing this issue with the Epidemiology and Surveillance Units to guarantee our Covid-19 data is up to date,” Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Singh-Vergeire stated.

She added vaccination and changes in the country’s health care capacities and processes may have contributed to the fall of CFR.

“However, while overall Covid-19 deaths have drastically dropped over the last months, our examination of hospital admissions showed that 85 percent of those hospitalized were those who are not yet fully vaccinated. Also, individuals with severe or critical Covid-19 disease were 1.75 times more common among the unvaccinated, while deaths due to Covid-19 were 2.6 times more frequent also among the unvaccinated,” Vergerie stated.

“The vaccination campaign has helped lower our case fatality rate. Hence, the DOH continues to urge the high-risk population, especially senior persons and those with underlying disorders, to get fully vaccinated to provide them with additional protection against Covid-19,” she added.
