Duterte maintains his ‘friend to all, enemy to none’ stance, according to the Palace.

President Rodrigo Duterte’s decision to accept US President Joseph “Joe” Biden Jr.’s offer to attend the Summit for Democracy is “compatible” with his autonomous foreign policy, according to Malacanang.

Duterte welcomed the opportunity to convey the Philippines’ democratic experience and dedication to democratic ideals and nation-building at the Summit for Democracy, according to Acting Presidential Spokesperson and Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles.

China, which was not invited, slammed the US-organized meeting, claiming that there is no one-size-fits-all democratic approach.

Duterte is well-known for his friendship with China, a regional power.

The Philippines is one of the United States’ oldest Asian partners and Southeast Asia’s oldest strategically.

Nograles, on the other hand, stressed that the Duterte administration has always pursued an autonomous foreign policy.

“Si Pangulong (President) Duterte has always been steadfast in his foreign policy and even foreign relations,” she said. And, to say it bluntly and consistently, the President’s foreign policy has never changed – it has always been a friend to everyone and an adversary to none,” Nograles said in an interview with CNN Philippines’ “The Source.”

He emphasized that Duterte has always insisted on a policy that prioritizes serving the people and safeguarding the country’s interests.

“From the beginning of his term as President, he stuck to that, and President Duterte’s administration has always stuck to that – a friend to everyone, an enemy to none,” he continued.

China had its own International Forum on Democracy on Saturday, and the powerful State Council released a white paper titled “China: Democracy That Works,” which outlined how the country established its democratic model.

The statement questioned the US and Western definitions of democracy, pointing out that each country has its own democratic institutions and development models.

According to its website, the Summit for Democracy, organized by the United States, will focus on the challenges and opportunities confronting democracies and will provide a platform for leaders to announce individual and collective commitments, reforms, and initiatives to defend democracy and human rights at home and abroad.
