PRRD has withdrawn from the Senate campaign in 2022.

President Rodrigo Duterte personally filed his withdrawal statement for senator in the May 2022 national and local elections on Tuesday.

The law department of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) received the document at 4:59 p.m. based on the statement of withdrawal.

At the Comelec main headquarters in Intramuros, Manila, Duterte was escorted by Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea.

Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go, his former aide, withdrew his certificate of candidacy (COC) for president hours before he submitted his statement of withdrawal.

Duterte submitted his COC for senator on November 15 through his lawyer, Melchor Aranas.

Duterte is a senatorial substitute candidate for the Pederalismo ng Dugong Dakilang Samahan party.

Duterte’s withdrawal from the Senate contest was confirmed by Malacanang, who said it would let him to focus more on managing the country’s pandemic response and maintaining the gains made in securely reopening the economy.

In a press statement, acting presidential spokesperson Secretary Karlo Nograles said, “President Rodrigo Roa Duterte filed his statement of withdrawal at the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) this afternoon and would no longer be competing for Senator in the May 2022 national elections.”

Duterte sees his action as an opportunity to focus on efforts to achieve “transparent, unbiased, orderly, and peaceful elections” in May, according to Nograles.

“When his term ends in June 2022, the President plans to retire from the government to spend more time with his family after more than four decades in public service,” he added.
