Initial infrared damage to ‘Odette’ is estimated to be P178-M: DPWH

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) revealed on Friday that the damage to infrastructure caused by Typhoon Odette in the Visayas and Mindanao has been estimated at more than PHP178 million.

“We estimate that our constructions have been damaged to the tune of PHP178.4 million. “These are only the roads and bridges; buildings and private structures are not included,” DPWH Undersecretary Emerson Benitez said in a press conference.

Due to fallen trees, flooding, soil collapse, landslide, road slip, damaged bridge, and vehicular accident, the agency said 16 road sections were closed to traffic as of Friday midday – two in Central Visayas, one in Eastern Visayas, five in Northern Mindanao, and eight in the Caraga region.

Meanwhile, water and fallen trees have cut off access to four road sections, one in Northern Mindanao and three in Caraga.

In other impacted regions, all other national roads and bridges are open to all types of vehicles.

“We were able to discharge PHP100 million just an hour ago.” This will be utilized to keep our people on the ground, as well as their equipment, alive. We allocated PHP20 million to Region 6 (Western Visayas); PHP20 million to Region 7 (Central Visayas); PHP20 million to Region 8 (Eastern Visayas); PHP10 million to Region 10 (Northern Mindanao); and PHP30 million to Region 13 (Caraga). This is only a first answer; we hope to request further funding from the Department of Budget and Management,” Benitez stated.

Bureau of Maintenance Director Ernesto Gregorio Jr., on the other hand, stated that the appropriate equipment has been deployed to the affected areas in preparation for clearing operations.

“Our immediate response is to open the highways.” Except for flooded areas and certain road slips and landslides, it is (acting) Secretary Roger Mercado’s instruction,” he added.
