Ex-MMDA chair lauded for providing ‘invaluable service’ to Duterte’s administration

After resigning to become the national campaign manager of the presidential aspirant and former Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., Malacanang expressed gratitude to MMDA Chair Benjamin “Benhur” Abalos Jr. for his “invaluable contribution” to the Duterte government and the country on Tuesday.

“Chairman Abalos provided excellent and dedicated service to the Duterte government. “We thank him for his outstanding contribution to the country,” Nograles stated at a press conference at the Palace.

Abalos played a crucial role in organizing the official reaction with Metro Manila’s various local government units (LGUs) during the entry of various types of worry into the country and the country’s careful transition to alert level systems, according to Nograles.

He added, “We wish Atty. Abalos the best of luck and Godspeed.”

When asked if Duterte would still appoint a new MMDA head with less than four months till his term ends, Nograles said it’s prudent to wait and see what happens.

“Hintayin na lang po natin kung may i-appoint si Pangulong Duterte sa MMDA chair,” the source said. Meanwhile, the MMDA’s OIC is Atty. Romando [Artes] (Let us just wait and watch if President Duterte appoints someone to the position of MMDA Chair.) Meanwhile, Atty. Romando is our MMDA OIC),” he stated.

Abalos, the former mayor of Mandaluyong City, resigned on Feb. 7, a day before the national campaign period officially began.

When Danilo Lim, the MMDA’s previous chair, died of Covid-19 problems in 2021, he took over.

Marcos and Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte believe Abalos can “further strengthen and ensure” their prospects of winning the May 9 elections.

Following Abalos’ resignation, the UniTeam said in a statement that “his sensible and intelligent leadership expertise will play a key influence in driving the UniTeam to its desired triumph, which would therefore be a win for the Filipino people.”

Abalos said he joined the UniTeam because he believes in Marcos and Duterte’s “unifying leadership.”

Abalos was also the campaign manager for Marcos, the then-vice presidential candidate for Metro Manila, in the 2016 elections.
