During the start of the election campaign, there were no “unwanted” occurrences.

At the commencement of the election campaign season for national candidates in the May 9 national and local elections, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) has not received any adverse incidents.

“So far, we have not received any unfavorable reports,” Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez said in an online news briefing Tuesday. “However, there have already been reports of certain potential infractions of some norms and practices.”

“Except for some reason or another, the candidates have failed to get the requisite permits,” he said.

“There are a variety of causes behind this. They have been able to give entire documentation, needs, and so on in some circumstances. “These are hurting particular big events, not the campaign as a whole,” he continued.

Elaiza David, director of the Comelec’s Education and Information Division, said they have received 71 permit applications for campaign rallies in various regions, including four from presidential candidates in the National Capital Region and Region 3. (Central Luzon).

“We’ve identified Vice President Leni Robredo, Ferdinand Marcos Jr., Isko Moreno Domagoso, and Senators Ping Lacson and Tito Sotto in tandem in two regions thus far,” she said.

She claimed that Robredo and Domagoso’s applications were declined owing to a lack of paperwork, such as a special power of attorney, among other things.

According to David, presidential candidate Leody de Guzman has not received permission from the Comelec Campaign Committee to hold his proclamation rally in Quezon City on Tuesday evening.

When asked if the Labor leader’s group had requested for a permit, she replied, “No application received.”

The Comelec, Jimenez explained, is not prohibiting anyone from campaigning; rather, they are attempting to manage huge meetings in the wake of the Covid-19 outbreak.

“I just want to be clear because I’m concerned that something might get lost in the message and people would mistakenly believe that campaigning is illegal.” “That is not the case,” Jimenez stated emphatically.

“Mass gatherings are being restricted, thus that is the focus of our regulations.” They could still campaign through other means, but they won’t be able to hold large gatherings without a permit,” he added.

He asked people to report election breaches to the Comelec via social media or the internet.

“We’re putting in place incident reporting protocols.” We can now receive allegations of wrongdoings via our sumbongko@votesafe.ph email address. “We are inviting everyone to use that email address to report incidences of election violations,” he stated.

“On Twitter, we’re requesting that everyone use the hashtag #SumbongKo. This will allow us to spot probable election law infractions among the thousands of tweets. How are we going to accomplish this? “Our standard procedure is to refer these reports to the authorities with the closest probable relation to the crime,” he continued.
