Despite territorial disputes, PH and China are friends: Lorenzana

Despite their differing views on territorial concerns, Secretary of the Department of National Defense (DND) Delfin Lorenzana stated the Philippines and China remain friends and collaborators in a variety of areas.

Lorenzana made the comment after China’s Ministry of National Defense handed over donated military equipment worth 130 million Chinese renminbi (about PHP1.05 billion) to the DND in a ceremony at Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City on Wednesday.

“This military gift from China demonstrates how our two countries can be civil, diplomatic, and friendly despite territorial disputes,” Lorenzana said, alluding to Manila and Beijing’s territorial disputes in the West Philippine Sea (WPS).

On January 16, the first shipment of military equipment worth 76 million Chinese renminbi arrived in Manila.

Rescue and relief equipment, drone systems, detectors, water purification vehicles, ambulances, firetrucks, x-ray machines, EOD robots, bomb disposal suits, and transport vehicles are among the items donated, as are engineering equipment such as backhoes, dump trucks, forklifts, and earthmovers.

At a later date, a second batch worth 54 million Chinese yuan will be delivered.

China will support the Presidential Security Group’s capacity-building activities, Marawi reconstruction efforts, and other humanitarian assistance and disaster relief measures under the provisions of the donation.

“China, despite being a non-traditional partner, provided PHP370 million worth of weaponry and ammunition to Marawi at the height of the conflict in 2017. We are relieved that, after nearly five years of devastation, Marawi has risen from the ashes, with peace and order restored for the Filipinos who call it home “Lorenzana remarked.

Huang Xilian, Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines, acting Defense and Armed Forces Attaché Dou Xuding, Secretary to the Defense Attaché Maj. Lin Xinhong and delegates from the Chinese Diplomatic Corps were also present at the occasion.

Lorenzana was joined by other DND officials, the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, Gen. Andres Centino, and other military commanders, enlisted people, and civilians.

“Wei Fenghe, China’s defense minister, and I decided in 2020 to maintain stronger collaboration between our countries despite the WPS conflict. Both of us absolutely committed to the importance of peace in dealing with this complex subject,” Lorenzana said.

He claims that as allies, the Philippines benefits greatly in terms of trade, infrastructure, technology, and people-to-people interchange.

“We can accomplish a lot more if we work together. As the Chinese Lunar Calendar Year begins a new cycle, I wish both our peoples success, good health, and mutual respect for our sovereignties “Lorenzana went on to say.

The DND chairman praised China for its significant support of the defense and security sector on behalf of President Rodrigo R. Duterte and the Filipino people.
