The Commission on Elections will penalize official candidates for the national and municipal elections in 2022 who break the health and safety norms (Comelec), Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles, the acting presidential spokesperson, said on Wednesday.

Nograles stated that the Comelec will now be in charge of all election-related actions during the campaign season.

“So, in terms of enforcement, in terms of protocols and guidelines, dahil nag-umpisa nga po ang campaign period, February 8, kahapon, under na po talaga iyan,” he remarked in a radio interview.

According to Nograles, violators of campaign laws, guidelines, and protocols, including minimum public health requirements, will face appropriate sanctions or punishments from the Comelec.

All non-election-related actions will be handled by the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases, he noted.

The national candidates’ 90-day election campaign season began on Tuesday for the May 9 election.

Candidates were previously warned of the limits that will be applied for in-person campaigning, such as crowding or assembling a big group of people, entering households, kissing, shaking hands, hugging the public, and even taking pictures with supporters.
