Senatorial betting on Leni seeks an exception from the poll spending ban for the OVP.

Senatorial candidates for the presidential ticket of Vice President Leni Robredo and Senator Francis Pangilinan renewed their appeal to the Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Wednesday, claiming humanitarian reasons for allowing Robredo’s office to continue its relief operations.

The senate candidates stated the start of the official campaign period should not prevent them from addressing the urgent humanitarian needs of poor Filipinos affected by the pandemic and recent disasters.

Senatorial candidate Chel Diokno believes the Comelec should move swiftly in response to Robredo’s appeal.

“The OVP’s programs benefit a lot of Filipinos, which is why they shouldn’t be pulled into VP Leni’s campaign.” Furthermore, during this pandemic, these programs fill government deficiencies, particularly in terms of help and testing,” said Diokno, a law professor and human rights activist.

Meanwhile, former Ifugao congressman Teddy Baguilat said the polls should not hinder Robredo’s duties as Vice President.

Sonny Matula of the Federation of Free Workers, a labor leader, and senatorial contender, said the Comelec should move quickly on Robredo’s appeal.

“The Comelec exemption is critical because workers are in desperate need of the high-quality public service that only the OVP, with its extensive network and experience, can offer. “We hope the commissioners see that VP Leni has continuously provided assistance to the poor even before the campaign time began,” Matula remarked.

Meanwhile, lawyer Alex Lacson claims that the need for Robredo to keep her programs going is “beyond politics.”

“I share Leni’s appeal and urge Comelec to allow her petition to continue her pandemic and disaster response initiatives for humanitarian reasons during the campaign season,” he added.

Robredo paused the OVP’s efforts to help those who lost their employment and livelihood as a result of the epidemic on February 7 while waiting for Comelec’s ruling on her petition.

She had requested an exemption so that she could continue her Covid-19 response activities — Bayanihan E-Konsulta, Vaccine Express, Swab Cab, and medical support — even throughout the campaign.

Comelec Resolution No. 10747 establishes the norms and procedures governing the prohibition of public monies being disbursed in connection with the May 9 elections.

Senators Richard Gordon, Migz Zubiri, and Joel Villanueva, as well as Sorsogon Governor Chiz Escudero and former Vice President Jejomar Binay, were among the seven and five guest candidates sponsored by the Leni-Kiko team.

The group is now campaigning in the Bicol region, which is Robredo’s bailiwick.

Endorsement

Former Supreme Court Chief Justice Hilario Davide Jr., on the other hand, has endorsed the Robredo-Pangilinan ticket.

“Only this duo of Leni-Kiko has a vision for our country, or has presented to the people doable and achievable government programs within their six-year term that would lift our country and people out of years of stagnation and decay due to corruption and greed, incompetence, poor governance, and a lack of accountability,” Davide wrote in an open letter on Wednesday.

He believes the pair can realize the Filipino people’s goals, dreams, and aspirations for a great country where they can experience the “blessings of truth, justice, love, equality, and peace under a truly free and democratic government where the rule of law will always reign supreme.”

Davide, who has spent 41 years in public service in various elected and appointive roles, believes that electing Robredo and Pangilinan as the next president and vice president, respectively, will be in the best interests of Filipinos.

Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul Province of St. Louise de Marillac-Asia Philippine Mission, a group of Catholic nuns, also endorsed Robredo’s candidacy.

Robredo’s platforms include effective governance, integral human development, care for our shared home, defense of the sanctity of life and human rights, economic recovery, and political justice.

The group also indicated their support for Robredo’s other candidates.
