Kanlaon’s high-frequency volcanic quakes are monitored by Phivolcs.

Due to an increase in volcanic activity, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) is now monitoring localized earthquakes on the northwest flank of the Kanlaon Volcano.

The isolated earthquakes detected, according to Phivolcs Director Renato Solidum Jr., were high-frequency volcanic tremors. Unlike tectonic earthquakes, which are generated by fault movement, volcanic earthquakes are caused by magma movement or eruptions from the volcano.

“The sequence of earthquakes is focused around the volcano’s northwestern flanks and has to be monitored,” he said on Wednesday to the Philippine News Agency.

Localized earthquake activity on the lower northwest flank of Kanlaon Volcano, in the jurisdiction of Bago City, Negros Occidental, began at 8:12 p.m. on February 8, according to a Phivolcs notice published at 4 p.m.

Phivolcs has reported 11 “extremely shallow” earthquakes with magnitudes ranging from 0.9 to 2.1 as of 9 a.m. Wednesday.

According to Phivolcs, sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions from the summit crater have remained under baseline levels, averaging 387 tons per day since October 2021.

On February 3, 138 tons of SO2 were released into the atmosphere. On February 9, there is no apparent degassing activity from the crater.

The advice stated that “overall, localized shallow seismic activity and short-term ground deformation are likely produced by shallow hydrothermal or geothermal processes beneath the edifice that could generate phreatic or steam-driven explosions.”

The Kanlaon Volcano is still on level 1 alert (low-level unrest).

Due to the increased risk of abrupt and dangerous steam-driven or phreatic eruptions, Phivolcs underlined that access inside the 4-kilometer radius permanent danger zone (PDZ) must be strictly banned.

Residents on Kanlaon’s lower slopes should report any odd observations to their local authority or the Kanlaon Volcano Observatory in La Carlota City, Negros Occidental.

Pilots are also urged to avoid flying near the summit of the volcano since ejecta from any unexpected phreatic eruption can be dangerous to aircraft.
