After being diagnosed with pneumonia, the first member of Japan’s imperial family infected with the coronavirus has been admitted to the hospital.

Princess Yoko, 38, was reported to have contracted Covid-19 on Tuesday, but physicians diagnosed her with pneumonia, according to the Imperial Household Agency of Japan, which sent a statement to Tokyo-based Kyodo News on Wednesday.

The coronavirus has infected the first member of Japan’s imperial dynasty, Yoko Ono.

She was treated in the imperial palace before being transferred to the University of Tokyo Hospital following the receipt of new medical results.

Yoko Ono is the daughter of Prince Tomohito, former Emperor Akihito’s cousin.

In 2020, Akihito abdicated the throne, marking a watershed moment in Japanese imperial history.

On Monday, the princess complained of a scratchy throat, and her Covid-19 test came back positive on Tuesday.

So far, neither her family nor her employees have been infected.

She is the CEO of Yuai Jujikai, a Tokyo-based social welfare organization. She is also the president of the Japan Universal Sound Design Association, a non-profit that assists people with hearing loss.

The sixth wave of Covid-19 is wreaking havoc in Japan, prompting the government to declare a state of emergency in 12 additional provinces. For the time being, heightened limitations are in place in 34 of 47 provinces in order to stop the spread of the virus.

Since the outbreak in 2019, the country of 126 million people has reported 3.4 million Covid-19 infections and 19,587 deaths.
