Nearly 50K new Covid-19 cases have been reported in South Korea.

South Korea reported roughly 50,000 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, a new high fueled by the highly contagious Omicron coronavirus strain.

The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency reported that 49,567 additional cases were confirmed in the last 24 hours, bringing the overall caseload to above 1.13 million. On Sunday, there were 38,689 infections, which was the previous day high.

There were 21 more deaths, bringing the total number of people killed to 6,943, and 1,469 more people were brought to hospitals.

The number of infected people in critical condition increased by 17 from the day before.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Second Vice Health and Welfare Minister Ryu Geun-hyuk said, “Given the features of the omicron variant, the government revised the Covid-19 response strategy to focus more on taking care of serious cases and minimizing deaths.”

So far, 44.16 million people in South Korea have been vaccinated, accounting for 86 percent of the country’s 52 million people. Booster shots were also given to over 28 million people.

Covid-19 social distancing guidelines, which include a 9 p.m. curfew for restaurants, pubs, and gyms, were extended for two weeks on February 4th. Private gatherings are also limited to six people under the new restrictions.

Nightclubs, gyms, restaurants, cafes, indoor sports stadiums, and other establishments require Covid-19 vaccination passes.
