Next week, 5,000 OFWs will depart for Taiwan.

The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) announced on Saturday that 5,000 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) will be heading to Taiwan next week when certain nations’ borders reopen on February 15.

The 5,000 workers, according to POEA Deputy Administrator Villamor Plan, are individuals whose visas were held prior to Taiwan’s deployment prohibition last year.

“The amount of OFWs we will be able to send there is projected to be around 40,000.” But we already have roughly 5,000 staff departing,” he added during a public briefing in Laging Handa.

Taiwan’s borders were closed to anyone without citizenship or an alien resident certificate in May 2021.

On February 7, the Taiwanese government’s Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) announced the next step of permitting fully vaccinated migrant workers from the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Thailand to enter the country.

OFWs should also be aware that protocol-related costs will be covered by the employer or recruitment agency.

Before returning to their jobs, migrant employees must quarantine for 14 days and stay at the same hotel for additional seven days of self-health monitoring.

The CECC’s head, Chen Shih-chun, told Taiwan News that the quarantine period for international tourists will not be lowered until they attain a 50 percent booster vaccine coverage rate, which they plan to achieve by March.

Several countries, according to Plan, desire to hire Filipinos, notably in the health sector.

“There are many requests, but we must also consider our own needs here, therefore we still have a deployment cap to adhere to.” He stated, “We can only send up to 7,000 healthcare staff.”
