Children aged 5 to 11 are being vaccinated with Covid-19 by GenSan.

GENERAL SANTOS CITY – The local administration launched a vaccination push for children aged 5 to 11 years old against the coronavirus illness 2019 (Covid-19) on Monday.

The initiative began with many youngsters being immunized at the government-run Dr. Jorge P. Royeca Hospital (DJPRH).

The children were rewarded with cupcakes and cookies after receiving their immunizations, which provided much-needed protection against Covid-19.

Dr. Rochelle Oco, the city’s health officer, said they plan to vaccinate roughly 100 youngsters aged 5 to 11 who work in the medical field this week.

Oco, on the other hand, said she hopes to vaccinate additional youngsters in the age range next week.

“The Department of Health had already set a target of 9,000 children for us, but we’re starting slowly so we can measure our progress, therefore we’re planning to get at least 100 children immunized this week,” she explained.

The full agenda for the pediatric group will be announced next week, according to Oco.

The pediatric group is being vaccinated with a reformulated Pfizer vaccine, which is the only shot that has obtained emergency use approval from the Food and Drug Administration for children aged 5 to 11.

In a separate interview, Dr. Fidel Peamante, president of the local branch of the Philippine Medical Association (PMA), urged the local government to completely implement the immunization program for children as soon as feasible.

This, he stated after the local PMA discovered that the total number of pediatric cases here during the Omicron wave is larger than during the Delta version.

Despite the fact that Covid-19 instances have been falling in recent days, the Soccsksargen region, which includes this city, remains in the “high risk” category.

The local health office (CHO) had previously set a target of 459,732 people for immunization.

According to the information posted on the local government’s Facebook page, 344,120 residents are fully protected, while 29,668 others have had their booster vaccinations.

According to the CHO, the city’s average daily immunization rate has grown to 5,888 doses.

This city has documented a total of 17,430 cumulative confirmed Covid-19 cases, 16,397 recoveries, 423 active cases, and 604 fatalities since the pandemic began in March 2020.
