Under the national budget for 2022, PhilHealth will get P80 billion in subsidies.

According to a party-list lawmaker, the state insurer Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth) will get about PHP80 billion in subsidies under the projected PHP5.02-trillion national budget for 2022.

Anakalusugan Party-list Rep Mike Defensor said in a statement on Tuesday that next year’s PhilHealth subsidy of PHP79,990,995,000 is PHPP8.368 billion higher than this year’s PHP71.353-billion subsidy.

Increased government subsidies, according to Defensor, would provide more insurance coverage for vulnerable segments of the population, which is also part of the universal health care program’s requirement.

He explained, “The money is for the insurance coverage of millions of so-called indirect contributors, such as destitute individuals, the elderly, and disabled unemployed people.”

He pointed out that, in addition to its annual fiscal assistance, PhilHealth earns more than PHP100 billion from millions of private and public sector employees.

“As a result, the state health insurer will have about PHP180 billion for health services for its members next year,” he stated.

PhilHealth is engaged in a legal battle with some hospitals over unpaid claims totaling billions of dollars.

Defensor recommended the insurer and hospitals to work out their differences through conversation, with PhilHealth supporting the payment of valid claims while preventing doubtful and fraudulent claims.

“This has been an ongoing issue.” “On the one hand, honest health facilities and medical practitioners should be protected, and on the other hand, taxpayers and PhilHealth members should be protected,” he stated.
