Persons tied to Hamas are being monitored by the PNP as part of a ‘terror plot,’ according to the DILG.

MANILA, Philippines – Secretary of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Eduardo Año said some people are being watched in connection with the suspected plot of the Middle East-based militant group Hamas to operate in the Philippines.

“Those named in the report are now under surveillance and monitoring,” he added in a phone conversation on Wednesday night, referring to a report that the Philippine National Police had recently delivered to him (PNP).

He did not specify how many people are being watched for their alleged involvement in the plot.

“The PNP Intelligence Group is participating in this; they’re tracking the movement of these allegedly (connected) Filipinos,” Año said, adding that the effort has been coordinated with the Anti-Terrorism Council.

While he believes the operation has already been foiled, the DILG chairman stated that intelligence personnel is still monitoring the situation and gathering the necessary information.

“There are no signs that they are on the verge of putting it in place (plan to establish foothold). It’s still information that the intelligence community is acting on “The Director of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) stated.

The Philippine National Police Intelligence Group announced on Tuesday that it had unearthed a plot to recruit Filipinos who would be “used to kill Jews in the nation, hold rallies at the Israeli embassy, and broadcast anti-Israel video propaganda.”

The material was obtained thanks to the information provided by a Hamas local contact who was allegedly approached in 2016 by Hamas-Foreign Liaison Section chief Fares Al Shikli, who is based in Turkey.

From 2016 to 2018, the “local contact” allegedly traveled to Malaysia on many occasions to explore the possibilities of committing attacks in the Philippines in exchange for financial help.

This isn’t the first time Hamas has attempted to establish a foothold in Israel.

Taha Mohammed Ahmed al-Jabouri, an Iraqi national, was detained in Pampanga in January 2018.

The 64-year-old Al-Jabouri was described by authorities as a “chemist with the expertise of explosives” who was “closely associated” with Hamas. He was later deported to Turkey by the Bureau of Immigration.
