MANILA, Philippines — Since the start of the pediatric rollout this month, 263,931 children aged 5 to 11 years old have been vaccinated against the coronavirus, according to the Department of Health (DOH).

The immunization was deemed successful by the DOH, with only eight people reporting non-serious side effects such as rashes, pain at the injection site, fever, vomiting, and itchy throat.

Almost every province in the country has started vaccinating children aged 5 to 11, according to Health Undersecretary Myrna Cabotaje, but the phase of vaccination will still be dependent on the supply of Pfizer-BioNTech doses, the only vaccine with an emergency use authorization (EUA) for the age group.

“Kung sakaling late ang side effect, nakaalis na sila ng bahay, binibigyan sila ng number kung ano iyong mga iku-contact na mga health care worker at iyong mga institution para i-report ang kanilang mga nararamdaman at matugunan ang mga ito,” she said during a Laging Handa brief

She promised that further doses will be delivered in the coming weeks. In February alone, the country is expected to get 5 million doses of vaccines, with another 5 million expected next month.

According to Cabotaje, Filipino doctors are also looking into the possibility of vaccinating children aged 4 and under.

As of this writing, no local EUA for any other vaccination for this age range has been issued.

“Hintayin natin ang final recommendation ng experts at tapos kung may mag-file na po ng pagpapa-approve ng zero to five na manufacturer at taga-gawa ng ating bakuna,” she said.

Since the nationwide immunization program began in March 2021, the country has vaccinated nearly 61 million individuals.

According to Cabotaje, vaccination rates are still slow and poor in some places, including the Bangsamoro and Region 12, but vaccine reluctance is steadily reducing.
