The Philippines supports broad Asean strategic connections with the United States and India.
MANILA, Philippines — Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. stated Thursday that the Philippines supports the ASEAN’s (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) relationship with the United States and India being elevated to a “comprehensive strategic partnership.”
“The Philippines advocates and supports the United States receiving Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for the most realistic and pragmatic of reasons: it is, and will continue to be, the world’s leading force for the rule of law in international relations,” he said during the Asean Ministers’ Retreat in Cambodia.
“The first major power in history to be content with international rules that all other countries, including competing powers, can live by and work with to their advantage,” he continued.
Locsin also stated that he is looking forward to the projected Asean-US Summit taking place this year.
On the other hand, the Philippines’ support for an Asean-India comprehensive strategic partnership came just days after Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar visited the nation to reaffirm India’s strong bilateral ties with the Philippines.
“The Philippines fully supports Singapore’s request to upgrade India’s status to a comprehensive and strategic relationship,” said Locsin.
Locsin stated on February 14 that Asean and India might improve their marine cooperation.
