As the economy improves, IP filings will increase by double digits in 2021.

MANILA, Philippines — The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) reported that from January to December 2021, intellectual property (IP) filings increased by 11.6 percent year on year (YOY) to 46,496, recovering significantly from a drop in 2020, as looser quarantine restrictions last year reignited business and IP-related activities.

“Our vigorous IP marketing initiatives to reach more inventors, artists, and entrepreneurs enabled this huge rebound, particularly in UM (utility model), trademarks, patents, and copyright.” On top of that, we’re working hard to improve, streamline, and digitalize our services in order to attract more clients,” said Director General Rowel Barba in a statement released Tuesday.

“Our success in re-igniting demand for IP production and protection has strengthened our resolve to maintain our momentum in rebuilding the economy through IP,” Barba stated.
