The international world criticizes Russia’s actions in eastern Ukraine.

Following Russia’s recognition of Ukraine’s separatist regions of Luhansk and Donetsk as independent states, international condemnation has flooded in.

Austria, the Netherlands, Czechia, and Slovakia have all issued statements in response to Russia’s recognition of Ukraine’s separatist regions.

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s action, according to Austrian Prime Minister Karl Nehammer, is a flagrant violation of the Minsk agreement and an insult to diplomatic efforts for a peaceful solution.

“In these trying times, we stand alongside Ukraine.” The fact that Russia recognized Donetsk and Luhansk in the midst of diplomatic efforts to find a peaceful solution to an escalation is mind-boggling. Slovakia, jointly with its allies and partners, rejects this decision,” Prime Minister Eduard Heger stated in a tweet.

Meanwhile, Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala has stated that Russia’s decision is a clear violation of international law against a sovereign country.

“The recognition of separatist territories in Ukraine is a blatant breach of international law, Ukraine’s territorial integrity, and the Minsk agreements,” Dutch Foreign Minister Wopke Hoekstra stated in a tweet. The Netherlands strongly condemns this crime and will act swiftly in collaboration with our EU and NATO allies.”

Georgia, Kazakhstan, OSCE

In a joint statement signed by Zbigniew Rau, OSCE chairman-in-office and Poland’s foreign minister, Helga Maria Schmid, OSCE secretary-general, Margareta Cederfel, president of the OSCE parliamentary assembly and a Swedish lawmaker, and Roberto Montella, secretary-general of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) condemned the move.

“This step is a violation of international law and fundamental OSCE values, and it is in violation of the Minsk agreements,” it stated, urging Russia to reverse its decision immediately.

Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili criticized Russia’s recognition of Ukraine’s Donetsk and Lugansk regions on Twitter, while expressing support for the country’s territorial integrity and peace.

Mukhtar Tileuberdi, Kazakhstan’s foreign minister, has stated that his country will never recognize the separatist territories, urging the international community to seek diplomatic solutions to the crisis.

On Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin recognized the Donetsk and Luhansk areas of Ukraine as independent states and signed the necessary agreements in the Kremlin.

After amassing over 100,000 troops and heavy equipment in and around its neighbor, Russia, according to the US and its European allies, is preparing to invade Ukraine.

Russia has denied that it is planning an invasion and instead accuses Western countries of jeopardizing its security by expanding NATO closer to its borders.

Moscow started supporting separatist troops in eastern Ukraine against the central government in 2014 and has continued to do so for the past seven years. According to the United Nations, more than 13,000 people have died as a result of the violence.
