To aid the rehabilitation of the PH agricultural industry, a virology institute has been established.

MANILA, Philippines β€” After the government reported recent outbreaks of avian influenza in some duck and quail farms in Bulacan and Pampanga, the chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee said on Wednesday that establishing the Virology Institute of the Philippines (VIP) would be critical in ensuring the agriculture sector’s recovery.

The planned research facility for non-human viral diseases and prevention, according to Albay Rep. Joey Salceda, would allow the country to be “ahead of the curve” by allowing researchers to study viruses that are relevant to the context and national needs.

“Having a virology institute for non-human contexts would have gone a long way toward containing the recent avian flu pandemic,” Salceda added.

He said the law is a top priority for the president and asked the Senate to pass it before the Duterte administration hands overpower.

Meanwhile, the measure has already passed the House of Representatives on its third and final reading.

“Viruses in animals and plants are as common as they are in humans. Of course, zoonotic viruses that infect humans originate in animals. “As a result, we must stay ahead of the curve and be able to research viruses that are relevant to our setting and national needs,” Salceda explained.

As co-chair of the House Economic Stimulus and Recovery Cluster, Salceda formally extended his support to the Department of Agriculture’s (DA) efforts to combat the expanding outbreak of the H5N1 type of avian flu in Central Luzon farms.

In a letter to Agriculture Secretary William Dar, he said, “I write to express my full support, as Co-Chair of the House Economic Stimulus and Recovery Cluster, for the Department of Agriculture’s efforts to contain the recently found H5N1 strain of influenza among duck and quail farms.”

He offered to ask the Bureau of Customs to step up efforts to combat avian flu and guarantee that illegal poultry is destroyed as soon as it is discovered.

He also stated that the Philippine Ports Authority and the Department of Transportation will collaborate with the Department of Agriculture to develop recommendations to boost avian flu protection efforts.

Salceda wrote Dar, “I am aware of the magnitude of this threat and its potential impact on economic recovery if allowed unchecked.”
