Ten presidential candidates are expected to participate in the Comelec-sponsored debate.

MANILA, Philippines β€” The first presidential debate, which will be held by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) next month, is likely to draw all ten presidential contenders in the May 9 election.

“The discussions are unquestionably ongoing. The first presidential debate is scheduled for March 19, which is a Saturday. In a press conference, Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez said, “We have guarantees from all camps that their candidates would be joining us.”

The debates, according to Jimenez, will be broadcast live “However, there will be no live audience and everyone will be able to transmit.”

“He went on to say, “We will be creating the show ourselves, including the feed from the Comelec.”

The first debate, according to Jimenez, will be moderated by a single person.

“The moderator will be the one asking the questions, and the only one who knows what questions will be asked is the moderator.” “No one will know the answers to the questions ahead of time,” Jimenez stressed.

Candidates will be given a rough understanding of the themes, but no specific questions, according to Jimenez.

“Another important regulation is that candidates will not be allowed to bring anything onto the stage.” The Comelec official continued, “We will supply them with a pad and a pen on the podium, but they will not be allowed to carry notes to the debate.”

The location of the debate has yet to be determined.

Former presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella, labor leader Leody de Guzman, Manila Mayor Isko Moreno, former national security adviser Norberto Gonzales, Senator Panfilo Lacson, Faisal Mangondato, former senator Ferdinand Marcos Jr., Jose Montemayor Jr., Senator Manny Pacquiao, and Vice President Leni Robredo are among the candidates running for the presidency.

Marcos’ spokesman, Vic Rodriguez, said the standard-bearer of the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas “had not yet confirmed” his participation in the Comelec-sponsored discussion.

“His participation in the abovementioned event, which will be placed at the Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan,” Rodriguez said in a statement, “would only be confirmed if his rigorous campaign schedule permits.”
