Employers in Hong Kong who improperly discharged OFWs will be blacklisted by the Philippines.
MANILA, Philippines โ The Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong said that employers of overseas Filipino employees who were unjustly sacked after contracting coronavirus sickness in 2019 will be placed on a blacklist (Covid-19).
“Definitely, that’s the first step we’ll take if they’re found guilty of illegally terminating their employees,” Consul General Raly Tejada said at a press conference on Thursday. “But more than that, they’re culpable for breaking the Hong Kong employment ordinance for sure,” he said.
He stated that the Consulate General will work with Hong Kong’s labor authorities to ensure that the employers are prosecuted.
Several Filipino employees who contracted Covid-19 sought help this week after their bosses dismissed them, preventing them from being admitted to hospitals.
Last week, Tejada said, the situation was “chaotic” and that some Filipinos did found up without a place to stay for a variety of reasons, including being fired abruptly by their jobs. However, he stated that the majority of firms had already rehired their fired employees.
Three to five employers are being investigated further, according to the ambassador.
“Majority ‘yong sa sinabi kong 10, nakabalik naman at nakausap natin ‘yong mga employers,” he said. “Some of them were just taken by surprise and were afraid of the virus, they’re probably regretful and did not intend to do so, napakiusapan natin and they’re willing to take back the employees.”
