MANILA, Philippines — On Saturday, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) urged Filipinos to join hands in prayer for world peace, particularly in Ukraine.

Bishop Pablo Virgilio David, head of the CBCP, said in an interview with Church-run Radio Veritas that fervent prayer is critical to preventing the escalation of tensions between Russia and Ukraine.

“We, the bishops of the Philippines, are saddened and stand in solidarity with our Christian brothers and sisters in Ukraine, who are very concerned today; let us pray because we cannot afford another war, and war is a huge persecution around the world,” he continued.

The Kalookan priest also urged the faithful to join Pope Francis’ call for a Day of Fasting for Peace on Ash Wednesday, March 2, 2022, the commencement of the Lenten Season.

David expressed concerns that the Russian invasion would be a step toward resurrecting the era of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, and that it would convince other big countries to seize minor countries.

On February 24, Russia started a full-fledged invasion of Ukraine.
