BACOLOD CITY, Philippines – Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson of Negros Occidental said on Thursday that the province should remain on Alert Level 2 as a precaution because of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) is still present.

“Do you think we’re ready for Alert Level 1?” He told reporters, “I like to stay under Alert Level 3 but since they granted us Alert Level 2, I prefer to stay in that level.”

The alert level for Negros Occidental has been raised to 2 till February 28.

Lacson stated that he wants to be cautious of the virus, particularly during an election campaign.

“Somehow, with Alert Level 2, there’s a reminder to at least be cautious.” You’re already back to normal if you say Alert Level 1. “It’s just a friendly reminder that Covid-19 is still active,” he noted.

While the number of Covid-19 cases in Negros Occidental is decreasing, he believes the number might rise at any time if Negrenses become complacent.

“I’ll defer to the IATF on that” (Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases). “As I’ve said, I’d want to err on the side of caution,” he continued, “but our numbers are now truly moving down, which is a good sign.”

As of February 23, Negros Occidental had just 574 active Covid-19 cases, down from 3,445 at the beginning of the month.

The mayors of Metro Manila had already proposed to the IATF that the National Capital Region be placed on the lowest Alert Level 1 on March 1.
