As a result of Russia’s airstrikes, some 40 Filipinos have fled Ukraine

MANILA, Philippines β€” According to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), some 40 Filipinos have been safely evacuated from Ukraine, with some awaiting repatriation flights in neighboring countries.

The DFA’s Office of the Undersecretary for Migrant Workers Affairs (OUMWA) said in a statement that the Filipinos awaiting flights are in Poland, Hungary, and Moldova, with six having already returned home.

This comes after a mission from the Philippine Embassy in Warsaw, Poland, met with a group of Filipinos who escaped to Lviv during Russia’s invasion following weeks of cooperation with the Filipino community in Ukraine.

It was reported to the DFA that two ships with Filipino crewmen were hit by a bomb and shelling in the Black Sea.

On February 24, the Marshall Islands-flagged and Turkish-owned commercial cargo ship Yasa Jupiter was damaged by a bomb off the coast of Odessa, carrying 11 Filipino crew members.

The ship’s Turkish owner, Yasa Holding, confirmed with the Philippine Embassy in Ankara, Turkey, and the Philippine Consulate General in Istanbul that all crew members, including the Filipino crew, were unharmed, safe, and able to contact their families.

Another vessel, the M/V Nomura Queen, a Japanese-owned, Panamanian-flagged grain bulk carrier, was hit by a missile in the Black Sea off Odesa and sustained damage to her stern.

“On impact, one Filipino crew member fell and sustained a non-life-threatening injury, while the rest of the Filipino crew is safe,” according to the OUMWA.

The M/V Nomura Queen was last heard heading to Istanbul for repairs, according to the Philippine Embassy in Tokyo, and was anticipated to arrive on February 27.

“The Embassy and the Philippine Overseas Labor Office in Osaka (POLO-Osaka) are in contact with Nissen Kaiun, the ship’s owner, to monitor the sailors’ situation,” according to the OUMWA.

It was stated that once the sailors arrive in Istanbul, the Philippine Embassy in Ankara and the Consular General in Istanbul are ready to help Filipinos with repatriation if they choose to do so.
