Peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine have begun.

ANKARA, Turkey β€” On Monday, five days after Moscow launched a war on its western neighbor, Ukraine and Russia began peace talks.

The Ukrainian team arrived in Belarus’ Gomel area on Monday morning, which is bordered by both sides in the conflict.

On Sunday, the Russian delegation arrived at the conference location.

Russia’s military operation in Ukraine is already on its fifth day, after Russian President Vladimir Putin’s command last Thursday, just days after recognizing two separatist-held enclaves in eastern Ukraine.

The international world reacted angrily to the military move, with the EU, UK, and US imposing a slew of economic penalties against Russia.

Russia has been further isolated, with its airlines barred from flying in European and Canadian airspace, and a number of its banks barred from using the SWIFT international financial system.

According to Ukraine, 5,300 Russian servicemen were killed.

Since the start of Russia’s large-scale military operation in Ukraine, which is now on its fifth day, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry said on Monday that almost 5,300 Russian troops have been killed.

Hanna Maliar, Ukraine’s Deputy Defense Minister, released details on the Russian army’s anticipated losses from February 24 to February 28.

According to Maliar, the Ukrainian army killed around 5,300 Russian soldiers and destroyed 29 warplanes, 29 helicopters, 191 tanks, 816 armored combat vehicles, 74 artillery, and two ships/motorboats.

A Buk anti-aircraft missile system, 21 Grad multiple launch rocket systems, 291 vehicles, 60 cisterns, five AAD assets, and three unmanned aerial vehicles were also lost, according to her (UAVs).

Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the Defense Ministry to put deterrent forces on high alert on Sunday.

On Thursday, Putin approved the military incursion, only days after recognizing two separatist-controlled enclaves in eastern Ukraine.

According to the UN Refugee Agency, at least 368,000 Ukrainians have fled to Poland, Hungary, Romania, Moldova, and other countries since then.

Western powers have placed severe economic sanctions on Russia and have chosen to supply Ukraine with weapons and ammunition.
