DOE exec: The palace is expected to publish nuclear power strategy soon.

MANILA, Philippines β€” The Department of Energy (DOE) anticipates an executive order (EO) from the office of the president on the potential use of nuclear power for the country’s energy security.

“We received word from the President’s Office that the policy will be adopted soon. In a press conference on Wednesday, DOE Undersecretary Gerardo Erguiza Jr. said, “It’s an executive order.”

President Rodrigo Duterte signed Executive Order 116 in 2020, establishing the Nuclear Energy Program Inter-Agency Committee (NEP-IAC), which is made up of 17 agencies exploring the country’s nuclear power potential.

The results of the inter-agency committee have been presented to the Chief Executive.

In recent years, partnerships with other countries on feasibility studies have also been formed.

One of these collaborations is with Russia, which has developed a comprehensive framework for energy cooperation, including nuclear power.

Erguiza stated that Russia’s current predicament has had no impact on their relationship in researching nuclear power’s possibilities.

He stated, “We don’t see any problem with Russia in that regard.”

The Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation (ROSATOM) conducted a pre-feasibility study on the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP) as a result of the collaboration and discovered that the plant may still be operated.

According to ROSATOM, the cost of repairing and restarting the BNPP is between USD3 billion and USD4 billion.

The DOE and ROSATOM signed a memorandum of understanding on a pre-feasibility study for small modular reactor technology in 2019.

Aside from Russia, Erguiza stated that the Philippines has formed partnerships with South Korea and the United States to investigate the country’s nuclear potential.
