Firefighters will engage the public in a public awareness campaign about fire safety.

CEBU CITY, Philippines – On Tuesday, a top official with the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) said that firefighters will continue to work with the community to ensure that inhabitants are safe and secure from fires and other man-made and natural disasters.

Chief Supt. Felixberto Abrenica, BFP director for operations, said in his speech that bureau staff should be accessible to the public even after the country celebrates Fire Prevention Month in March each year.

Abrenica is in Cebu to lead the Central Visayas version of the simultaneous kick-off celebration for Fire Prevention Month 2022, which will be held at the BFP-Region 7 offices on N. Bacalso Avenue with the theme “Sa Pag-iwas sa Sunog Hindi Ka Nag-iisa.”

“I urge you to become more prominent in your neighborhoods. Abrenica read the message of BFP chief, director Louie Puracan, urging firefighters in the region to contact schools, children, and other civic leaders in establishing fire safety programs and activities, as well as train them for emergency response.

During the kick-off ceremony, Senior Supt. Mary Joy Candelario, BFP-7 deputy regional director for operations, stated that ensuring safety during fires is the responsibility of everyone, not just BFP personnel.

“We envision that fighting fire is no longer a bureaucratic battle, but rather a battle fought by every Filipino, every Cebuano, Boholano, Negrosanon, and Siquijodnon.” Let us all work together to practice fire safety, participate in, and be cautious in preventing undesirable fire occurrences, and never forget that knowledge and alertness are the keys to fire prevention,” she stated.

Puracan signed Memorandum Circular 2022-003 as guidelines in institutionalizing the bureau-wide Fire Prevention Month campaign, as the BFP modernization statute necessitated innovation and change of the agency.

Every fire station in the region was required to identify a target barangay within its area of responsibility where they could undertake hazard evaluation, hazard elimination, and tactical defense under the BFP’s trademark contingency planning model, community fire protection plan.

The barangay will be taken through the process of building a community hazard map, which will include a detailed guide for escape routes, evacuation routes, and designated evacuation places in the event of an emergency.

Smoking, open flame from trash, bonfires, and structure fire were the leading causes of the 1,891 fires reported by the 2,354-strong BFP-7 in 2019, with damage estimated at PHP257.4 million.

However, during the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic in 2020 and 2021, the numbers fell.

In 2020, the agency documented 918 fires with total damage of PHP231.3 million, the majority of which were caused by electrical ignition.

In 2021, there were only 905 fires, but the damage was valued at PHP335.5 million, with electrical ignition caused by arcing being the primary cause.
