More schools are offering face-to-face classes, according to the Department of Education in Bicol.

LEGAZPI CITY, PHILIPPINES – The Department of Education in Bicol (DepEd-5) announced that face-to-face (F2F) sessions had begun in the region, with more schools expected to join.

In a message sent to the Philippine News Agency on Wednesday, DepEd-5 spokesman Mayflor Marie Jumamil said they are observing an increase in the number of schools that will implement limited F2F classes if the region remains under Alert Level 2 community quarantine status.

However, she claims that the opening of in-school classes is not done in all 1,029 Bicol schools at the same time.

“Maybe next week, nag-start nga. Hindi po sabay sabay, pero mag-start sila within this month. (Some have already begun; others will begin next week.) It isn’t happening at the same time, but it will be in March) “Jumamil said.

More schools are planning to open their doors to pupils, according to her, and are now preparing for and completing the requisite evaluation.

DepEd-5 Director Gilbert Sadsad said in a statement that all expansion schools passed the School Safety Assessment Test (SSAT) and followed the DepEd central office’s interim rules on the extension of restricted F2F programs.

According to the guidelines, schools must pass the SSAT, be located in areas classified as Alert Levels 1 and 2, obtain approval from the local government unit, obtain written consent from parents or guardians of learners planning to participate, and coordinate with respective barangays for collaborative implementation of the onsite learning modality.

As of February 24, 986 public schools and 43 private schools have been approved to participate in the region’s gradual expansion of limited F2F programs.

Some teachers, according to Sadsad, conduct dry runs and orientation sessions with parents, local government units (LGUs), and other stakeholders to learn about the operational dynamics and interplay between distant learning and face-to-face classrooms. Other schools have held Brigada Eskwela to prepare the school facilities for a safe reopening of courses.

He further mentioned that several schools are currently undergoing Department of Health SSAT validation and are requesting approval from the regional office and their local LGUs.
