DUMAGUETE CITY — According to figures from the Provincial Health Office (PHO), senior persons account for the majority of overall deaths in Negros Oriental due to coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).

In a virtual press conference on Thursday, Assistant Provincial Health Officer Dr. Liland Estacion said that 502 of the 738 fatalities were aged 60 and more, accounting for 68 percent of the total.

There were 255 males (51%) and 247 females among the 502 elders who died of coronavirus (49 percent).

“Based on these facts, we can observe that senior folks are at a higher risk of being infected by Covid-19,” she remarked in a combination of English and Cebuano.

Estacion appealed to the public once more to encourage senior citizens in their families to get vaccinated against Covid-19.

One of the requirements for Negros Oriental to qualify for Alert Level 1 is that 70 to 80 percent of its 149,312 senior residents be inoculated. Until March 15, the province is on Alert Level 2.

Only 55,562 senior citizens have been fully vaccinated thus far, which is less than half of the target, according to Estacion.
