Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Saturday that the West’s imposition of sanctions on Moscow is akin to declaring war.

Putin said many of the challenges Russia is facing are means of fighting against the country during a meeting with female employees of some Russian airlines on March 8 ahead of International Women’s Day.

Any attempt to impose a no-fly zone over Ukraine, Putin said, would be seen as entering the fight.

“Now we’re hearing that a no-fly zone should be established over Ukraine’s land. This is impossible to do on Ukrainian land; it can only be done on the territory of some bordering states,” he stated.

Any move in this manner, he warned, “would be regarded by us as participation in the armed struggle of the country whose territory may cause threats to our personnel.”

“We will treat them as participants in the military fight right now, regardless of whatever organizations they belong to,” he continued.

Putin stated again that Russia could not “pass by” Ukrainian leaders’ claims about their aspirations to develop nuclear weapons, claiming that his neighbor might become a nuclear power rapidly with Soviet heritage and Western assistance.

“Since the Soviet era, Ukraine has had nuclear capabilities. They can also organize work on enrichment and nuclear elements. Kyiv also has missile capabilities. “And they’ll help us accomplish it from across the water,” he continued. “We want to demilitarize the country because we want to know exactly whose weapons are where and under what management,” said the group.

The Russian president went on to say that Ukraine’s desire to join NATO might have serious implications as well.

According to Putin, if Ukraine were a nuclear state and a NATO member, the alliance would not need ballistic missiles to deter Russia since it would keep Russia at nuclear gunpoint on its own border.

He claimed that the demilitarization aims have practically been met, citing the destruction of warehouses containing weapons, ammunition, aviation, and air defense equipment.

Putin urged the Ukrainian government to handle the issue of foreigners detained in the country.

Putin said Russia has sought to settle the conflict in Donbas amicably for eight years, and that the demands of the breakaway areas “were not big.”

He also said that the actions implemented against them were excessively harsh, and he chastised Western countries for failing to notice the concerns of Donbas residents for nearly a decade.

Russia declared two separatist-held enclaves in Ukraine’s Donbas area as separate republics on the brink of declaring war on Ukraine last week.

Regarding the evacuation of civilians, Putin stated that Russia promptly agreed to Ukraine’s proposal to establish humanitarian corridors in Mariupol and Volnovakha, but that civilians are not permitted to leave.

He further claimed that 6,000 foreign students were being kept as “hostages” at a railway station in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv.

Putin claimed that Russia informed Ukrainian authorities, Western politicians, and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres about foreign students held by Ukrainian security forces, but that no action has been taken to remedy the matter so far, with just verbal pledges made.

He further claimed that militants from the Middle East and other European nations had been sighted in Ukraine by the Russian military.

Putin also revealed why he decided to put Russia’s nuclear forces on high alert, claiming that it was prompted by British Foreign Minister Elizabeth Truss’ remark that NATO is involved in the Ukraine war.

The president disputed that Russia will declare martial law, claiming that the country’s army control is imposed by a presidential decree in the event of an external assault.

“But we don’t have such a circumstance now, and I don’t think we ever will,” he remarked.
