The Comelec and the poll monitor will sign a partnership to promote voter education.

MANILA, Philippines β€” On Friday, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) and election monitor Democracy Watch Philippines will sign a memorandum of understanding (MOA) to enhance voter education among Filipino adolescents and first-time voters in May 9 elections.

The agreement, according to Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez, will pave the way for the Vote Right 2022! voter education campaign, which will consist of a series of seminars and lectures held in collaboration with various schools, universities, and non-government organizations across the country using virtual platforms.

“We acknowledge that teaching and equipping the youth sector on their right to vote is a collaborative responsibility that not only the Commission, but the entire Filipino community must shoulder β€” it truly does take a village.” As a result, we enthusiastically support efforts that target young and first-time voters, as the figures plainly reveal that they will make up a sizable portion of registered voters in the May 9 elections,” he added.

The Comelec has also agreed to provide field resource persons for the various activities.

DemWatch will also be provided access to data essential for the fulfillment of the agreement’s objectives, subject to applicable data protection laws, rules, and regulations, according to the polling organization.

“DemWatch has been a Comelec partner since the 2016 elections, and has provided important support in our voter education campaigns.” “We expect to repeat our gains in the elections in 2022,” a polling official stated.

DemWatch has been a key resource organization in recent congressional hearings of the Joint Congressional Oversight Committee on the Automated Elections System (JCOC-AES), House Committee on Suffrage and Electoral Reforms, and Senate Committee on Electoral Reforms and People’s Participation as a non-government poll watchdog.

At 10 a.m., the signing ceremony will take place at the Comelec Session Hall, 8th floor, Palacio del Gobernador, Intramuros, Manila, with acting chairperson Socorro Inting and Jimenez representing the poll body, and Francesco Javier Pangalangan, lead convenor of Democracy Watch, and convenors Lloyd Ian Zaragoza and Orlando Oxales representing Democracy Watch.
