Canada announces new P81-M ‘Odette’ aid to the Philippines.

MANILA, Philippines β€” The Canadian government has pledged an additional CAD2 million (about PHP81 million) to help Filipinos devastated by Typhoon Odette, which hit the Philippines in December 2021.

This is on top of the CAD3 million pledged in the immediate wake of the storm, increasing Canada’s total help to nearly CAD5 million to far, according to the Canadian Embassy in Manila.

“Two months after super typhoon Odette devastated widespread areas in the Visayas and Mindanao, Canada continues to work with the Philippine government, the United Nations, and our partners to address the needs of vulnerable people still suffering the after-effects of this climate change catastrophe, the world’s second-deadliest natural disaster of 2021,” said Canadian Ambassador to the Philippines Peter MacArthur on Friday.

“The fortitude and resolve of Filipinos, as well as the relentless efforts of those crisis responders trying to restore livelihoods, reconstruct infrastructure, and address acute humanitarian needs while coping with the pandemic, have astounded and humbled us,” he continued.

The World Food Programme will receive around CAD1 million of the newest funding to offer affected areas emergency food assistance, as well as telecommunications and logistics support.

The remaining CAD1 million, on the other hand, would go toward emergency shelter activities run by the International Organization for Migration.

Canada had earlier announced an initial CAD3 million in the financing, which comprised CAD500,000 through the Canadian Red Cross to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, CAD700,000 to Oxfam Canada and Plan International, and CAD1.8 million to the World Food Programme.
