Injuries caused by fireworks are 59 percent less than the five-year average

According to a health official, fireworks-related injuries (FWRIs) for 2021 increased to 167, which is greater than in 2020 but lower than the five-year average.

Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire reported 14 more FWRIs as of 6 a.m. Monday in an online media forum, bringing the total to 167.

“This number is slightly more than the 120 cases reported in 2020, but it is still 59 percent lower than the five-year average of 403 incidents during the same time period,” Vergeire added.

According to DOH data, the National Capital Region (NCR) has 65 percent of the FWRIs, followed by Region 1 (Ilocos Region) with 25 percent and Region 6 (Western Visayas) with 23 percent.

Males aged 2 to 74 years old account for 120 of the 167 cases, or 75 percent.

Seventeen instances, or 10%, had blast or burn injuries that required amputation, 110 cases, or 66%, had to blast or burn injuries that did not require amputation, 44 cases, or 26%, had eye injuries, and four cases, or 2%, had several types of injuries.

Meanwhile, active users of fireworks accounted for 75 percent of the cases, with 99 percent of the injuries occurring at home, 74 percent in the streets, and one case occurring on a basketball court.

A total of 19 instances (about 11 percent) were suspected of being inebriated.

There have been no complaints of fireworks ingestion, stray gunfire injuries, or fatalities as of yet.

The Department of Health reported that 50 of the 61 sentinel hospitals, or 82 percent, had filed an injury or zero case report before the deadline.

“We’d want to express our gratitude to our partner local government units, health development centers, and hospitals for effectively managing and implementing our Iwas Paputok campaign for the year 2021,” Vergeire added.
