To keep up with online criminals who are becoming more daring by the day, the government will soon improve the technology used by the National Bureau of Investigation’s (NBI) anti-cybercrime branch.

Undersecretary of the Department of Justice Adrian Sugay stated that purchasing new equipment is one of the measures being taken to combat online financial scams.

“Under the aegis and guidance of the NBI Reorganization and Modernization Act (Republic Act 10867), the NBI is geared toward the acquisition of state-of-the-art investigative and intelligence equipment, as well as the establishment of a Cyber Investigation and Assessment Center,” Sugay said in a text message.

Online fraudsters continue to use “social engineering” and “psychological manipulation techniques” to “convince unwary and vulnerable persons to give their confidential/personal information online,” he claimed.

The National Bureau of Investigation’s Cybercrime Division continues to host social media information drives, seminars, and capacity-building and training on emerging technologies.

The organization also searches social media platforms at random to look for online discussions that could indicate future attacks.

The Cyber Investigation and Assessment Center, as defined by the legislation, is the nerve center for computer information technology and data on cybercrime cases, computer intrusion, threats, and other connected offenses.
