The Bureau of Immigration (BI) revealed on Monday that the number of overseas passengers between the last day of 2021 and the first day of the new year nearly doubled compared to the previous year.

Commissioner Jaime Morente stated in a statement that 10,140 people arrived on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day this year, compared to 5,791 during the same two-day period in 2020-2021.

The number of travelers departing climbed to 6,951 from 3,770 previously.

“The trend demonstrates that the number of travelers is steadily increasing. While the numbers are still low, they are significantly higher than the previous year. “We’re looking for better results in 2022,” he said.

Lawyer Carlos Capulong, the head of the BI Port Operations Division, also confirmed that airport operations were “smooth” throughout the holidays.

“Because we expected an increase in travelers, we made sure that our manpower was increased.” We also made sure that our e-gates were operational so that we could shorten lineups and maintain social distance,” he said in a separate statement.

During the holidays, ninety-nine new immigration officers were dispatched to supplement BI’s airport staff.
