NEW YORK (AP) — According to Instagram’s CEO Adam Mosseri’s Twitter page, the service will be disabled in Russia on March 14.

“Instagram will be restricted in Russia on Monday,” Mosseri said, criticizing the decision.

“This move would isolate 80 million Russians from one another and from the rest of the world, as about 80% of Russians follow an Instagram account outside their nation,” the Instagram CEO stated.

The Russian Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology, and Mass Media agreed on Friday to finish the process of blocking Instagram access at 00:00 on March 14th.

Active Instagram users “would require time to transfer their photographs and videos to other social networks and tell their followers,” according to the media watchdog.

Due to the rise of hate speech towards Russians, particularly military people, the media watchdog decided to block Instagram.

The Russian Prosecutor General’s Office had previously requested that Meta, which encompasses Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, be declared an extremist group and banned in Russia.

In light of the special military operation in Ukraine, Meta later admitted that it had briefly allowed incitement to violence against Russian military personnel.

On Twitter, business spokesman Andy Stone noted that they “temporarily accept forms of political expression” that would ordinarily be prohibited by the firm’s rules of service, such as “violent rhetoric” and threats against Russian military personnel.
