MANILA, Philippines — A health official said Tuesday that the country’s vaccination experts are working on implementing guidelines for the delivery of Sinovac’s Covid-19 vaccine to children aged six and up.

The Food and Drug Administration granted Sinovac’s CoronaVac an emergency use authorization (EUA) on March 11, allowing the Chinese vaccine to be used for pediatric vaccination.

“Kailangan titignan natin mabuti kasi ang nasa EUA ng Sinovac ay for healthy individuals, healthy children.” So, baka hindi kasama ‘yung ating mga (It’s like [vaccine administration] for 5 years and up, we need to be cautious because the EUA for Sinovac indicates for healthy adults, healthy children). In a televised public briefing, National Vaccination Operations Center Chief Myrna Cabotaje said, “This may not include children with comorbidities.”

Contrary to the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine, which had to be reformulated, Cabotaje indicated that the same CoronoVac dosage formulation used on adults will be utilized on kids.

“We don’t need to buy any more Sinovac [vaccines] since we have enough on hand,” she explained.

Because just 15 million doses of Pfizer jabs for pediatric vaccination have been bought, the government will not reduce its supply.

According to the NVOC, there are 15.5 million children aged 5 to 11 years old in the United States.

Because each child required two doses of the vaccination, the 15 million doses of Pfizer vaccine would only cover seven million minors.

According to Cabotaje, the government may consider purchasing an additional five million Pfizer vaccination shots for youngsters.

“So, 20 million [doses] will cover 10 million children who require two doses (So, 20 million [doses] will cover 10 million children who require two doses).” As a result, Sinovac will supply additional supplies for children and parents who do not want to use Pfizer and instead choose to use Sinovac,” she explained.
