For polling tasks, the AFP will use ‘non-combat’ personnel.

MANILA, Philippines β€” The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) announced on Tuesday that personnel from several headquarters will be sent to assist the government in ensuring that the upcoming local and national elections on May 9 are secure and peaceful.

“Prior to, during, and after the National and Local Elections on May 9, 2022, military troops executing non-combat operations may be tapped to carry out election duties. This would allow the AFP to concentrate on its main objective of combating local armed threats “Col. Jorry Baclor, the AFP’s public affairs office chief, said in a statement.

The AFP is one of the deputized government agencies and instrumentalities responsible for ensuring free, orderly, honest, peaceful, and credible elections, according to Commission on Elections (Comelec) Resolution No. 10470.

Despite this new assignment, Baclor stated that the AFP will continue to carry out all internal security activities as well as its other roles and obligations.

Military personnel’s election responsibilities include providing protection to polling stations, voting centers, canvassing centers, and election paraphernalia.

Security for approved Comelec representatives can also be provided by AFP officers. The AFP can also provide land, air, and sea assets, as well as communication systems and other equipment, to help Comelec meet its logistical needs, particularly in distant places.

According to Baclor, the military and partner law enforcement agencies are also investigating and preventing the formation of any armed group with the intent of committing acts of terrorism or making threats against individuals in order to sway their votes.

“Soldiers assigned to election duties may also assist in enforcing election regulations, such as those prohibiting military, police, and provincial guards from acting as bodyguards for candidates, and those prohibiting the carrying of firearms or lethal weapons in public areas,” he added.

As part of the government’s attempts to ensure peaceful and orderly elections, the AFP, the Philippine National Police (PNP), and the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) created a cooperative legal cooperation mechanism in February to confront lawless groups.

The Joint Letter Directive (JLD) No. 01-2022 intends to improve collaboration among relevant agencies in the investigation and prosecution of threat group leaders, members, and supporters, as well as their financiers.
