Senatorial bet argues localized salaries are more egalitarian.

MANILA – Senatorial aspirant and former defense chief Gilbert “Gibo” Teodoro has argued that localized pay is more equal than a statewide minimum wage.

Teodoro said in a statement released Tuesday that because provinces have varied circumstances, wages should be established by the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board rather than being institutionalized.

“I am not in favor of a statewide minimum wage because it eliminates the ability to raise it further,” said the former Tarlac congressman and 1989 Bar topnotcher.

Instead of a blanket payout, Teodoro stressed the importance of the government bolstering social programs and providing effective government services to the public to help Filipinos cope with the aftermath of the pandemic and the oil price crisis.

Teodoro, who has worked as an executive for a number of companies over the last 12 years, believes that a uniform pay will make the country less competitive in recruiting new investment.

He noted that this would not assist, particularly in provinces with poor infrastructure, because corporations assess the available infrastructure and pay rates before investing.

The private sector previously stated that it is not yet time to raise wages and implement across-the-board pay since businesses are still recovering from the pandemic.

Firms’ operating expenses are also projected to rise as oil prices rise owing to the war between Russia and Ukraine.
