MANILA, Philippines — Since the Department of Health began the pediatric vaccination program on February 7, a total of 1,233,017 children aged 5 to 11 years old have been vaccinated against Covid-19.

Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire stated in an online media forum that 381,433 children aged 5 to 11 are fully immunized.

“In the meantime, 9.7 million bakunadong 12 to 17 years old,” Vergeire added.

Government employees who accompany their children to their immunization appointments “may make use of exceptional leave advantages,” she said.

Vergeire reassured parents of children that the government is continuing to purchase adequate Covid-19 vaccines for kids to protect them against the virus.

The Food and Drug Administration granted Sinovac’s CoronaVac an emergency use authorization (EUA) on March 11, allowing the Chinese vaccine to be used for pediatric vaccination.

Chief of the National Vaccination Operations Center, Myrna Cabotaje, said the country’s vaccine experts are completing guidelines for administering Sinovac’s Covid-19 vaccine to children aged 6 and up in a televised public briefing on Tuesday.

Cabotaje went on to say that the vaccination will provide additional protection for kids and parents who don’t want to utilize the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine.
