MANILA, Philippines — The designation of an Alert Level 0 in a specific location does not indicate the coronavirus illness 2019 (Covid-19) has been eradicated, Dr. Ted Herbosa, special medical adviser to the National Task Force (NTF) against Covid-19, said Wednesday.

Herbosa made this statement in response to his previous assertion that the National Capital Region (NCR) is already suitable for Alert Level 0 designation.

He stated that while the mayors of Metro Manila have already proposed downgrading the metropolis to Alert Level 0, the public should be aware that Covid-19 remains active.

While he believes the NCR is currently qualified to de-escalate to Alert Level 0, Herbosa stated that he still supports the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases’ (IATF-EID) decision to maintain Alert Level 1 status in the NCR until March 31.

“Kaya sang-ayon ako sa suggestion ng IATF kasi nandyan naman ang Covid, anytime pwede siya mag-reemerge at magkaroon ng epidemic),” he said in an interview at the Laging Handa public briefing.

Even if the NCR is placed on the lowest alert level, Herbosa said the public should continue to follow basic health standards and safety practices for Covid-19, noting the importance of vaccinating the unvaccinated and providing booster doses to the eligible population.

Herbosa, on the other hand, stated that the Alert Level System will now be integrated into the Department of Health’s epidemiology surveillance for emerging diseases such as the Covid-19 pandemic.
