TACLOBAN CITY, Philippines – According to the Department of Health, the cities of Tacloban and Ormoc will be placed on Alert Level 1 for two weeks starting Wednesday (DOH).

The two cities and Biliran are now on Alert Level 1, according to DOH regional information officer Jelyn Lopez-Malibago, while the provinces of Leyte, Southern Leyte, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, and Samar remain under Alert Level 2 from March 16 to 31.

Since March 1, the province of Biliran has been on Alert Level 1.

The alert levels in Tacloban, the regional capital, and Ormoc, the commercial hub of northwest Leyte, have been reduced, according to Malibago, due to a decrease in new coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) cases and low-risk hospital bed utilization.

“In addition to this, the provinces and cities’ Covid-19 vaccine coverage led to the de-escalation of Tacloban and Ormoc cities, which joined Biliran province under Alert Level 1,” Malibago said in a phone interview.

She claims that more than 70% of the target population has been fully vaccinated in these places.

Intrazonal and interzonal travel are permitted under Alert Level 1, regardless of age or comorbidities.

For as long as minimal public health criteria are met, all facilities, persons, or activities are permitted to function, work, or be done at full on-site or seating capacity.

Meanwhile, on March 14, 2022, the region registered zero new Covid-19 cases, the first of the year.

Four additional cases were reported on March 15, and six new cases were reported on March 16, bringing the total number of active cases to 70.

Eastern Visayas has 62,509 Covid-19 cases as of March 16, with 61,325 recoveries and 663 deaths.
