Farmers in Ilocos Norte to receive fuel subsidy

LAOAG CITY, PHILIPPINES – Farmers in Ilocos Norte who have been hard hit by the massive increase in oil prices will receive government subsidies to sustain their crops this summer.

Provincial Board member Domingo C. Ambrocio confirmed this on Wednesday, following the passage of Draft Resolution 2022-03-465 authorizing Governor Matthew Joseph Manotoc to enter into a memorandum of agreement with various gasoline stations to grant eligible farmers gas vouchers.

Ambrocio stated that they initially considered giving “Small farmers cultivating non-irrigated farmlands will receive a PHP500 gas voucher,” but with the rising cost of fuel, the provincial government plans to give more, subject to funding availability.

The provincial government proposed the grant of fuel subsidies as irrigation assistance to farmers in November last year after several farmers in the province, including those from the Salbang Farmers Association in Paoay, Ilocos Norte, were among the first to request fuel assistance from the provincial government.

“At the moment, the fuel subsidy program has 1,000 target beneficiaries, and we hope to expand that number if additional requests come in,” Ambrocio said.

Additionally, the Department of Agriculture (DA) announced earlier this week that each farmer and fisherman in the country is eligible for a PHP3,000 fuel subsidy to offset the impact of the three-month-old oil price hike.

This is part of the initial PHP500 million in funding that the DA is expected to distribute to farmers and fishermen next month.

Corn farmers who use machinery for production, from land preparation to postharvest activities, and fishermen who use motorized boats weighing three gross tons or less are eligible for the fuel subsidy program.

Additionally, they must be members of registered farmer and fisher associations or cooperatives and provide proof of ownership and operation of functional machinery.

“I’m hoping that the reported fuel subsidy for farmers reaches us as soon as possible,” said Aristotle de Lara, a corn farmer from Barangay Pila in Laoag City.
