Lacson wants stronger regulations for ‘e-sabong’ operations.

MANILA, Philippines β€” Senator Panfilo “Ping” Lacson of the Partido Reporma said on Wednesday that the government must tighten rules on “e-sabong” (online cockfighting) activities if it is not willing to suspend it.

According to Lacson, as more Filipinos grow addicted to it, the social consequences might be severe.

“At the very least, man lang is governed by stringent regulations. Huwag 24 hours (At the very least, ‘e-sabong’ should be strictly regulated.) Making ensuring it doesn’t run 24 hours a day is a good start). Pagcor (Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp.) must be strict in exercising its regulatory jurisdiction (Pagcor must be strict in exercising its regulatory authority) “He went on to say that the activity’s online nature made it difficult to track.

Lacson went on to say that the social cost of “e-sabong” is too great, with abroad Filipino workers unable to return home due to gambling debts, and parents forced to pay debts incurred by their addicted children.

According to him, there have also been stories of people committing suicide as a result of “e-sabong,” as well as police officers raiding convenience stores to pay off debts.

President Rodrigo Duterte rejected parliamentarians’ calls for the country’s “e-sabong” operations to be halted, claiming that the government would incur significant financial losses.

Twenty-three senators have signed Resolution 996, demanding Pagcor to suspend the licenses of “e-sabong” operators and to halt all connected activities until the cases of 31 missing cockfighting fans are resolved.

Lacson previously stated that there are other options to produce much-needed money, including better tax law implementation and revising current legislation such as the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion (TRAIN) Law.

He mentioned that he had attempted to change the TRAIN law to reduce more than 100 exemptions from the value-added tax, but was defeated at the time.

Another approach to raise the necessary funds is to digitize all government operations and transactions, leaving little possibility for human error – and corruption.
